The importation of Chinese porcelain and celadon into Europe has long been thought to have first begun around the thirteenth century AD. A unique group ceramic sherds from archaeological contexts in Spain dated between ninth eleventh centuries, however, now represents earliest wares identified Europe. Such an unexpectedly early presence on high-status sites Western probably reflects changing patterns commerce Indian Ocean giving prestigious gifts at very highest levels social political power across Islamic Mediterranean world.
